PNG to SVG for Cricut: Make a Clean Cut File

Upload a PNG and get an SVG that Cricut Design Space can actually cut: closed outlines, no hidden pixels, and the white background already gone.

Why Cricut needs an SVG, not a PNG

When you upload a PNG to Cricut Design Space, it has to guess where to cut. You get the background removal screen, a lot of erasing, and edges that often come out wobbly. An SVG skips all of that. It already contains the exact outline of every shape, so Design Space reads it as a ready-to-cut image and keeps the lines smooth at any size, from a small decal to a full shirt print.

How to make a Cricut cut file from a PNG

  1. Drop your PNG above. The Line art / Cricut preset is already selected on this page.
  2. Adjust Threshold. Move it right to make thin lines thicker and keep letters connected. Move it left to drop faint shadows and anti-aliasing fuzz.
  3. Lower Detail to remove specks. Tiny islands are a pain to weed. A lower Detail value drops them before they reach your mat.
  4. Set the size. Type the final width in inches or millimeters so the design opens at the right size in Design Space.
  5. Download the SVG and in Design Space choose Upload, then Upload Image, and select the file. It appears as a cut image right away.

Single layer vs multi-color designs

The Line art preset produces one black layer, which is what you want for vinyl decals, stencils, and iron-on in a single color. If your PNG has several colors you want to cut from different materials, switch to the Logo preset. Each color becomes a separate layer in Design Space so you can assign it its own material and attach or slice as needed.

Pro users also get the single-color cut file mode. It takes a multi-color design, keeps every non-background area, and merges it into one solid silhouette. That is ideal for a base layer in layered vinyl, a shadow layer for a shirt, or a single-color version of a colorful clip art.

Common Cricut problems this fixes

  • White box around the design. Remove white background is on by default, so the background never becomes a cut path.
  • Letters falling apart. Raising Threshold thickens strokes so the centers of letters like O and A stay attached as holes, not loose pieces.
  • Thousands of tiny pieces. Lower Detail and pick a higher-resolution PNG. Specks under a few pixels are removed.
  • Wrong size on the canvas. Set Output width in inches before downloading.

Privacy for your designs

If you design for clients or sell on Etsy, you probably do not want your artwork sitting on a stranger's server. This converter never uploads your PNG. The trace runs inside your browser, and the SVG is created on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PNG to SVG for Cricut for free?

Drop the PNG into the converter on this page, keep the Line art / Cricut preset, adjust Threshold until the shapes look solid, and click Download SVG. Then upload the SVG in Design Space.

Does the SVG keep a transparent background in Design Space?

Yes. White and transparent backgrounds are dropped, so only your design becomes a cut path.

Why are some letters cut into pieces?

Thin strokes can break when the image is small or faint. Raise the Threshold slider to thicken lines, or start with a larger PNG.

Can I make a multi-layer SVG for layered vinyl?

Yes. Use the Logo preset and set the number of colors. Each color is saved as its own path, which Design Space shows as a separate layer.

Does it work with Silhouette Studio too?

Yes. The SVG opens in Silhouette Studio Designer Edition and above. The free Basic Edition cannot import SVG, so Pro users can export DXF instead.
